How do I read a virtual Colonoscopy
Image Display
Following image acquisition, the CT data can be viewed using a variety of techniques. These include simple evaluation of the axial CT images at lung window settings (Figure 1a,b), reformatted two-dimensional images at cross-sectional and orthogonal planes to the long axis of the colon (Figure 2a), and three-dimensional endoluminal (simulating conventional endoscopy images, (Figure 1c,d)) and extraluminal images (simulating barium enema images (Figure 2b,c, Figure 3a)). The main role of the post processed 3D views are to differentiate polyps from complex normal colonic folds which can have a similar appearance when viewed in profile using the axial images alone. Most investigators agree that virtual colonoscopy examinations should be interpreted using two-dimensional and three-dimensional viewing technique. A primary 2D review using appropriate views is often sufficient for problem solving. It is important to remember that whether one uses 2D or 3D as the primary review technique, both must be available to accurately differentiate folds, polyps, and residual fecal material.
Several companies offer software which can be used for evaluation of the colon and 3D imaging see useful links page. It would be our pleasure to discuss pros and cons, of each.
